It is important to note that most upper respiratory infections are viral related, and therefore not caused by bacteria. Taking an antibiotic upon the first signs of cold or flu will only make matters worse long-term by negatively affecting your microbiome (flora in the gut).
Find below a list of my favourite cold and flu busters, in order of priority:
Concentrated essential oils of Frankincense, Clove, Thyme, Mugwort, Oregano, Bitter Almond, Rosemary, Marjoram and Cinnamon.
A powerful remedy against bacterial infections of the upper respiratory system and bladder infections. Take 4 to 6 drops in a little water three to four times daily before food. For those faint at heart, place the drops in empty veggie capsules to mask the strong taste. Swallow the capsules with water immediately, before the powerful essential oils dissolve the capsule.
Make sure to always have this 'natural antibiotic' available at home!
Another one of my all time favourite supplements, which my whole family uses. Humigold consists of humic acids, which have amazing anti-viral properties and packed with essential and trace minerals.
Humic acid will assist in preventing colds and flu, as well as alleviate the symptoms and will aid in fighting bronchitis. This immune boosting supplement will also assist with pain relief. A must have supplement in every health regimen.
Take 3 to 4 capsules two to three times daily to alleviate cold and flu symptoms or fight an infection. Two capsules twice daily is a good maintenance and preventative dosage.
Iodine has amazing anti-microbial and immune supporting properties. Make sure you are not iodine deficient. To test if you are deficient, rub 2 drops Lugol's iodine on your skin and if the yellow stain absorbs within two to three hours, you are very deficient. To support health and prevent illness, take 2x drops daily in water or transdermal.
To fight an infection, take 4 to 6 drops twice daily if tolerating iodine well.
Homeopathic remedy, use preventative and curative. Take as directed on label. Available from pharmacies and health shops.
Make sure to use a buffered version with added bioflavonoids. My favourites are Big Ceee, Super Natural C from Natural Vibrance or Vita C combo from The Real Thing. Use at least 1,000mg daily as preventative measure. However, take 1,000mg every two to three hours upon the first signs of a cold or flu.
Use zinc as preventative (20mg daily) and curative measure by taking 20mg every 4 hours upon the first sign of cold or flu. Don’t take longer than 3 days at the high curative dosage. Selenozinc, zinc glycinate or orotate are good.
Best remedy for sore throat and upper respiratory problems. Take 10 to 12 drops of a 100% extract in a little water upon the first signs of throat infection – gargle with the propolis, before swallowing.
Septogard from TIBB
Presented in syrup or tablets, thus for infants, kids and adults. Good antimicrobial properties to use as curative measure for all respiratory and urinary infections. Available from health shops. Take as directed on label.
Please note that no remedy could ever replace good food. A balanced wholefood diet should be the first line of defence. It is important to also stay well hydrated throughout the day and enjoy a natural hot winter tonic to prevent and bring relief to cold and flu symptoms. And last but not least, award yourself with the much-needed bed rest!

Headaches? Cold? Cough? Flu? Stomach Bug?
Into a mug add: 4 to 5 thin slices or grated fresh ginger root, juice of ½ lemon, 1 to 2 cloves freshly chopped garlic, pinch of cayenne pepper and a little non-irradiated turmeric (anti-bacterial and liver cleansing).
Add boiling water and steep for about 10 min.
Add 1 teaspoon raw honey
Drink slowly and go straight to bed.
In acute cases repeat every three hours.
Natural cough remedy
Peel an onion and slice. Pour 60ml raw honey over the sliced onion and let it seep for half an hour. Drain the honey and use a tablespoon of the honey at a time as cough remedy.
